Authorities from Larimer County to Denver had been searching for Falcon Heene since his brother reported that Falcon had climbed into a small compartment under the helium-filled balloon moments before it unexpectedly came loose from its tether at the family house and rose into the sky.
Falcon’s parents, Richard and Mayumi Heene, called police, as well as KUSA-TV 9News to ask the television station to send its helicopter in pursuit.
The balloon voyage southeast from Fort Collins was telecast live across the nation on cable news programs. Hearts broke when the balloon landed softly about 1:30 p.m. south of Denver International Airport and television coverage showed viewers that no one was aboard.
While all eyes were on the balloon chase and landing, Falcon apparently was lying low in a box in the attic above the garage. Police officers spent the day with the family and had searched the house and property when they first arrived.

Temperatures were in the upper 60s Thursday, facilitating the takeoff of a balloon never meant to carry people. It reportedly was intended to fly into storms to catch data.
If Falcon had been aboard, the balloon apparently took off so fast he would have had only 30 seconds to jump out.
The balloon traveled as much as 60 miles and as high as 3,000 feet above the more than mile-high terrain.
It looked at times like a silver mushroom or a UFO or even the spaceship that hovered over Johannesburg in the movie District 9. The situation Thursday was similar to the movie in one sense: No one had ever dealt with anything like this before.

This family is a bunch of science nuts. I feel sorry for the kids. Like they’re being raised by some religious cult.

Looks like a hoax perpetrated by a panicked kid. Satellite trucks are scary. Legally it is doubtful could be prosecuted. I am scared by the thought of social services getting involved. I sense that you are every bit as kind as any of us.

I only know that if a child (not just my own son) were in trouble, I wouldn’t stop to call a TV station. Henne called the TV news BEFORE he called 911. That says volumes. Period. I feel badly for the child, since he slipped and revealed the truth. I’m not sure about the vomiting, but he’s either sick or very upset. In any case, why would you subject your child to another TV interview after he’s already puked? Why was there a bowl available for him to throw up in and the parents were so nonchalant about it? I hate conspiracy theories and we shouldn’t blame innocent people without proof, but I never believed the family for a minute. Complete stunt to get attention.
The father is mentally ill and has a host of self worth/esteem issues. He needs help and his family need him to be removed from the home asap. He has and is damaging those kids. What a shame. The authorities should bring charges against the Mr. heene for his irresponsible and wanton.
Think of the first responsders who scrambled and put themselves in peril. What if the heli had dropped someone via rope line to attempt to rescue a phantom child. What if the rescuer was injured or worse? For nothing.
How much MONEY is this going to cost Colorado tax payers? It is beyond the pale that a father would involve his SIX year old son in an elaborate hoax to gain attention for himself. He is depraved and sick.
What no one is asking is where was the national guard? They didn’t scramble any f16s to intercept
