Rose Medical Center launches bariatric program for teens

roseThe Bariatric Surgery Center at Denver’s Rose Medical Center said Wednesday it is launching Colorado’s first bariatric treatment program designed for teenagers.

Rose’s new “Teen Obesity Weight Loss Program” is “a comprehensive medical and surgical program that will provide nutrition, exercise, and psychological counseling with the goal of giving teens the skills they need to reach and maintain a healthy weight for life,” the hospital said in a statement.

Rose cited data showing that 16 to 33 percent of U.S. children and adolescents are obese.

“This program’s main goal is to improve the health of young people who need help,” Dr. Michael Snyder, medical director for the Bariatric Surgery Center at Rose, said in a statement. “This isn’t just about having surgery and it’s not some quick fix. Families and teens go through months of counseling and classes before any surgical option is considered.”
