Out-of-work artist travels nation to collect recession stories

“I’m just trying to collect as many perspectives as I can,” Aaron Heideman told 9News. “I’m going all over the country collecting stories that have affected people from the recession.”
Monday and Tuesday, he was in Civic Center.
“I started in Oregon and California, and then I went to Nevada and Utah,” he said.
He calls himself “The Man in a Van.”
“What I’m finding is that everyone has a different story, and everyone is connected to each other in some way,” Heideman said.
The stories he collects are scribbled on his van and on a 50-yard banner. Most are tales of sadness.
“Some people have lost homes, some have lost their benefits,” he said.
But not all stories are about loss, some are about finding opportunity.
“They bought a foreclosure. It was valued at $280,000 before the recession. They purchased it for, I think he said $33,000,” Heideman said.
His art can be cathartic for many who share their troubles about the recession.
And he can relate to their stories.
“Well, I lost my job like six months ago. So basically at that point I decided I needed to do something crazy, and this is crazy for me because I don’t have the money to do it,” Heideman said.
He’s hoping the bright orange T-shirt he wears will catch on.
“I’ve only sold five so far,” he said.
