Nuggets’ Karl: surgery today, chemo tomorrow… coaching Friday?

Denver Nuggets coach George Karl will have surgery today as part of ongoing treatment for throat and neck cancer.  Karl will then take on a Chemotherapy session Tuesday before resting Wednesday when the Nuggets play the Timberwolves in Minnesota.

Coach Karl last missed a game on February 25th at Golden State, a game the Nuggets won 127-112.  Minnesota snuck up and bit the Nuggets in Denver earlier this year, but have the worst record in the Western Conference at 14-49.  With George recovering, expect Denver veterans like Chauncey Billups and Carmelo Anthony to carry the team.

Amazingly, Karl says he will try to make it back to the Nuggets’ bench for Friday’s game at New Orleans.  Radiation treatments to this point have had minor side-effects, but today’s surgery immediately followed by tomorrows Chemotherapy will likely have a more profound effect.

Said Karl of the surgery, “I don’t think it’s a serious surgery, but they’re going to have to cut your body open and put something in your stomach. There’s always concerns.”

Wednesday’s game at Minnesota will kick off a four-game road swing for the West’s #3 team.  Denver will play at Memphis on Saturday and wrap up in Houston next Monday.
