MediaNews to charge for Web content at two papers in Calif., Pa.

Officials of Denver-based MediaNews said in May they would explore ways to boost revenue from their Web platforms and to protect the value of their news content.
Starting in the first quarter of next year, MediaNews will start charging a fee for some online content at the Chico, Calif., Enterprise-Record and the York, Pa., Daily Record. The Post might be added later if the experiment is successful.

While MediaNews and Rupert Murdoch dither like old women about whether they will go “pay” or not, an INDEPENDENTLY OWNED NEWSPAPER right here in northern Colorado has already broken the trail for its corporate cousins.
The Johnstown Breeze, owned by Matt Lubich and Lesli Bangert, went to a paid model in August of 2009.
