Fort Carson sergeant dies in Bagram Airfield attack

A 28-year-old Army sergeant based at Fort Carson was killed in an attack on Bagram Airfield. Sgt. David A. Davis of Dalhart, Texas, died Sept. 19.

Defenselink.mil said Davis was killed by “indirect fire.” That means the attackers launched an assault without seeing the target.

Wikipedia says aiming is performed by calculating azimuth and elevation angles, and may include correcting the fall of shot by observing it and calculating new angles.

Bagram is one of the most highly defended sites in Afghanistan and is the location of a detention center.

Davis was assigned to the 32nd Transportation Company, 68th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 43rd Sustainment Brigade, 4th Infantry Division.

He was on his third deployment, twice fighting in Iraq, and had received numerous medals for his service. News releases did not say whether he was married.

He was the 842nd American killed in Afghanistan. A record number have been killed this year.

President Obama is expected to be asked to send more troops to Afghanistan. He has said he will review any such requests carefully before approving it.
