DU rolls to championship game
The University of Denver hockey team is one victory away from winning its unprecedented 16th WCHA playoff championship.
Marc Cheverie stopped 42 shots and three players scored as No. 4 DU stopped Wisconsin 3-0 in the semifinals of the WCHA Final Five on Friday afternoon before 14,722 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.
Defending WCHA playoff champion DU (23-10-5) will play North Dakota or Minnesota Duluth in the championship game Saturday night.
Brian Gifford, Kyle Ostrow and Patrick Wiercioch scored for DU.
“I really liked our businesslike approach” DU coach George Gwozdecky said. “We made some mistakes at times, but Cheverie was there to bail us out. We’re here to win this championship and we’ll take our best shot tomorrow night.”
