Drew Litton: Time to use our Heads

concussions

Scrambled.
I’ve been meaning to do this cartoon for awhile now and finally got around to this very topical issue. In one of my many secret identities I do cartoons for the North Metro News here in Denver. They are always high school related and this just seemed like the right time to use this. I’m interested to hear your feedback on this one. It’s hard hitting about an equally as hard hitting subject.

Drew, did you read that piece in a recent New Yorker about autopsies performed on the brains of former boxers and football players, mostly the latter? It’s shocking what happens to the brain when it undergoes an accretion of hits to the head. And they don’t have to be equivalent to an auto accident to cause incremental damage to the mind. I’m not sure I wouldn’t advocate outlawing anything but touch football for kids under 18. I know Texas and other states would probably secede it that ever happened, but I don’t think children should be subjected to that danger. This ain’t small potatoes, man, this is your MIND! Once you turn 18 and choose to play tackle football, good luck. Apparently all the technology in the world won’t create a helmet that will prevent such injuries.

How about the idiots that still are full body donars becuse of ridding a motorcycle without a helmet. I don’t think people understand what having a head injury really means. They don’t get the idea that it will limit their ability to function in all kinds of manner, like seeing, reading, writting, speaking, breathing, eating. It’s so stupid that in this day and age that children under 5 will be given pills for being “overi-active” and adutlts will purposely bang their heads “for the fun of it”.
