Madigan, a longtime editor at the Rocky, released Heroes, Villains, Dames & Disasters / 150 Years of Front-Page Stories from the Rocky Mountain News in June. INDenverTimes published a five-part series.

The original series started publication in the newspaper and was to have run for 150 days. The closing of the Rocky on Feb. 27 ended the series after barely 100 chapters.

Edward Kennedy’s True Compass is reportedly to be initially priced at $1,000 each for the limited-edition book to be released by Hachette Group in the fall. As opposed to the other copy to be released to the general public at $35, this leather-bound edition is set to include exclusive family photos.

According to the newly published Spies: The Rise and Fall of the KGB in America, Ernest Hemingway was agent Argo recruited by the Soviets in 1941. Hemingway, according to the book, which was based on the KGB archives that were briefly opened to Western researchers in the 1990s, “repeatedly expressed his desire and willingness to help us.”

Hemingway met with Soviet KGB operatives in Havana and London in the ’40s. Whatever his motivations, Hemingway turned out to be a poor source and was never of any practical use to the Soviet Union, according to the book.

For over a century, Brentano’s the English-language bookstore at the heart of Paris was home away from home to such greats of American literature as Twain, Hemingway and Fitzgerald. Now it is no more.

Recently the store couldn’t pay its rent, a victim of the global trend that squeezes small and independent bookstores particularly hard. Blame the Internet.

Open-source paradigm

Who picks up the pieces after the old structures break down? The book explores many of Doctorow’s provocative and visionary ideas, specifically, the concept of a “plausible premise” as it applies to hackers discovering the connections between technologies and concepts to create new technologies in the wake of an economic collapse.

Mash-up tinkering

The idea is based on the fact that our technological world is replete with gadgets and devices that can be reconfigured, hacked and mashed-up into new configurations. All that’s needed is the plausible premise, the one proof of concept that shows the marketplace that something can be done.
