Air Force loses in double OT in bid for Frozen Four
Air Force fell one game short of reaching college hockey’s Frozen Four.
Vermont’s Dan Lawson scored with 4:01 left in the second overtime Saturday to give the Catamounts a 3-2 win over the Falcons in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn.
The East Regional-champion Catamounts advanced to the Frozen Four and an April 9 semifinal matchup with the Northeast Regional champ (New Hampshire will play Boston University on Sunday afternoon).
The second-seeded Falcons had advanced with an upset of No. 1 Michigan on Friday. No. 3-seeded Vermont had advanced with a victory over No. 4 Yale.
Air Force, which upset top-seeded Michigan on Friday, had a 22-14 edge in shots through the first two periods.
Neither the Falcons nor Catamounts scored in the first period, during which Air Force had a 10-8 shots-on-goal advantage. But Air Force snapped the tie at 3:46 of the second period on a goal by Paul Weisgarber.
Vermont tied it in the third period on a shot by Josh Burrows, then went ahead 2-1 on a shot by Dan Lawson with 10:31 left in regulation. But a Sean Bertsch goal tied it 2-2 less than two minutes later, and the teams went into their first overtime.
